Culture Ministry, UNESCO Discuss Terrorist Danger Targeting Syrian Artifacts

DAMASCUS, (ST)-Talks on Wednesday between Culture Minister Isam Khalil and the Regional Representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Hamad bin Saif al-Hamami focused on the danger to which the Syrian cultural heritage is exposed as a result of the takfiri terrorist organizations’ attacks.

They also tackled the role of international organizations in protecting the antiquities, stopping their smuggling to neighboring countries and recover the stolen artifacts.

Following the meeting, Khalil told reporters that “The Culture Ministry, which strongly condemns the crimes committed by the terrorist organizations against the Syrian human heritage and antiquities in Palmyra and other areas, is keen at the same time to cooperate with UNESCO in renovating damaged Syrian antiquities,” Khalil told reporters following the meeting.

He added “the ministry has urged further UNESCO efforts aiming to protect historical monuments and antiquities in Syria through putting pressure on concerned parties to comply with the Security Council resolutions related to criminalizing illicit trafficking of Syrian antiquities.”

On his part, al-Humami said “we met to discuss ways of boosting the strong and continuous relations between Syria and UNESCO particularly during the current era.”

“UNESCO spares no effort to protect the cultural heritage in Syria which has a great international cultural value and we seek upgrading skills in Syria to preserve the human heritage,” al-Humami added.

He pointed out that UNESCO and several Syrian institutions are cooperating as to implement a big future project to upgrade cadres in these Syrian institutions to contribute to the era of reconstruction after security and stability is restored to Syria.
