Culture Ministry adopts measures to protect Syrian antiquities from terrorists’ attacks – Khalil

DAMASCUS,(ST)_Culture Minister has underscored that the ministry adopted precautionary measures to protect antiquities and museums in Syria from the armed terrorist organizations’ attacks.

Isam Khalil clarified that some Syrian archeological sites exposed to random digging and damage by terrorists, who had stolen several artifacts and conveyed them to western countries in collusion with the Turkish government.

“The stolen artifacts were sold to finance and arm the terrorist organizations with the western countries’ governments’ approval,” the minister added, stressing that these government do not abide by the international law and UN resolutions, especially N0.2199 on protecting Syrian and Iraqi antiquities.

He indicated that culture ministry and the institutes that affiliate to it determine to restore all stolen Syrian artifacts and to prosecute those involved.

“The ministry has all documents that prove its ownership of the artifacts,” Khalil said, calling on the international bodies to play an active role in this regard.  

The minister, in addition, referred to the French government’s negative role in the crisis in Syria, affirming that culture ministry is ready to receive any French cultural delegation to uncover the truth, which the western media outlets tried to smear.

His remarks came during his yesterday’s meeting with a French delegation, who is visiting Syria to express solidarity with Syria, the cradle of civilization.

War on humanity

The delegation’s head, Rima Khlifawi, said that the goal of their visit to Syria is to look closely at what is going on and at the Syrian cultural activities, which are still active despite the events in country.

She called for increasing cultural communications between Syria and France to boost communication between peoples, according to the official news agency (SANA).

On his part, the French Lawyer Alexis Dobroal expressed his desire to help the Syrian side in any judicial action at international level to restore the artifacts. “the Syrian heritage is a human heritage,” he added.

Another member of the French delegation, his name Abdul Nasir al-Iraq- A Tunisian computer engineer living in France- described the war on Syria as a ‘war on humanity’.
