Cuban Embassy in Damascus holds celebration on the 63rd anniversary of the foundation of Prensa Latina agency
DAMASCUS, Jun.15, (ST)- The Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Damascus held on Wednesday a celebration on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the foundation of the Latin American News Agency, Prensa Latina.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Cuban Ambassador in Damascus, Miguel Porto Barga, Agency President Luis Enrique Gonzalez said that the main objective of the foundation of the Prensa Latina Agency on June 16, 1959 was to defend the Cuban revolution, convey the voice of the peoples of Latin America and defend the just causes of other peoples in the world.
He pointed out that the agency faced huge media campaigns, pressure and attacks on its journalists and correspondents, and attempts to silence it since its first day.
Gonzalez considered that the agency’s presence in Syria over the past period was necessary to convey the reality of what is happening in it, highlight its history and culture, and the heroic confrontation of its people to the aggression and terrorism that their country has been subjected to, stressing the importance of cooperation with the Syrian Arab News Agency “SANA” as a direct source of news that shows the true face of the terrorist war, which Syria is exposed to.
For his part, the Cuban ambassador, in his speech, praised what the Prensa Latina agency had done in Syria, as it contributed to revealing the truth of what is happening there and showed true solidarity with peoples and world peace, stressing that “Syria can always rely on Cuba to convey the truth regarding the unjust war and the siege that targets the Syrian people.
During the event, a film was screened about the history of Prensa Latina and the services it currently provides, as it relies on 40 correspondents on 5 continents and daily publishes about 400 articles in several languages, in addition to several radio and television programmes.
