Cuban Embassy in Damascus commemorates the 7th anniversary of the passing away of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro

Damascus, (ST) – The Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Damascus on Wednesday held an exhibition at Al-Assad National Library in Damascus on the occasion of the 7th anniversary of the passing away of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.

Participants in the exhibition showcased photos and screened videos about the life of the late leader, and on this occasion a wreath was laid at the monument of the late leader Hafez Al-Assad in the Library Square, which Castro visited in 2001.

The Cuban ambassador to Damascus, Luis Mariano Fernandez Rodriguez stressed in a speech that the ideas and legacy of leader Fidel Castro, which are firmly rooted in social justice, are present today more than ever in the conscience of everyone who struggles for a better world in which the values of solidarity and cooperation between peoples, peace and well-being prevail for all human beings, without any ideological, racial or political distinction.

Ambassador Rodriguez pointed out that Fidel has always supported the Syrian people in their struggle for their sovereignty and independence, and in 1973, at the invitation of the late President Hafez Al-Assad to contribute to the defense of Syrian sovereignty against the Israeli aggressor, Fidel Castro did not hesitate to send an international battalion of tanks, in which Cuban soldiers participated in the fighting with their brotherly Syrian army.

In a statement to reporters, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh stressed the importance of Fidel Castro’s principles and values in supporting the resistance, liberation movements, and the Palestinian cause, which is going through a difficult stage today as a result of the barbaric and brutal Israeli aggression. He pointed out that Fidel has become a global historical figure, and generations throughout the world will continue to remember this leader.

In a statement to SANA, Ambassador Rodriguez said that strengthening bilateral relations between Cuba and Syria is the best way to commemorate and honor Fidel.

The participants in the exhibition were the Director of the Diplomatic Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Imad Mustafa, a number of department directors in the Ministry, a number of ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in Damascus, and a number of leaders and representatives of Palestinian factions.
