Craftswoman Yasmine Houssamo’s Unique Copper Works

Copper industry  is one of the leading features that has distinguished Damascus since ancient times as large international museums include many copper pieces such as pitchers, cups,  censers, candlesticks and chandeliers .  

Craftswoman  Yasmine Houssamo  seeks to make her own artistic imprint in pressing copper  paintings and decorations  by giving the name   “ Abaq” ( fragrant ) to her works  to  express copper, as  a masterpiece overflowing with beauty, embodying originality  and deep-rooted history. 

Houssamo  participated in several exhibitions during which she received awards and certificates of appreciation. She is currently working to establish  her own gallery to display her cooper works and a workshop with the participation of fans of cooper products  to be a platforms for every artwork.

 “Copper is an attractive metal, as far as , accuracy and creativity   in addition to it being an ancient industry in our country”, the artisan expressed to SANA.   

Houssamo  is attracted to handicrafts that show the ingenuity of  hands and their ability to make and shape, explaining that she finds herself more interested in dealing with copper than painting, as it is colored in different degrees through aging. 

The artisan’s copper  works varied between paintings, decorations, and copper portraits of famous personalities, in addition to paintings of Arabic calligraphy inscriptions.  She pointed out that she worked on applying copper with   natural  aged wood and linked her paintings to the presence of women as a source of love and beauty to show this clearly in her works.

She referred to  new techniques in her copper artworks  such as using crystal beads, adding  She is  currently  working on introducing copper decorations on home and office furniture , trying to express  her inner passion within an elaborate artistic work , which is rich in love and attention . 

The craftswoman  expressed her desire to draw and  engrave  lines of beauty in her workshop away from the  difficult circumstances of the nine-year war on Syria to reflect   the bright face of Syrians  represented by art, creativity and love of life.   

It is noteworthy that the craftswoman Houssamo  holds a  BA in Geoscience   from Damascus University and comes from the village of Ba’amrah  in the countryside of Safita.
