Countries’ Sovereignty, Territorial Integrity Should Be Respected: Al-Jaafari

NEW YORK, (ST)- Syria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Bashar Al-Jaafari has urged adherence to the principle of respecting countries’ sovereignty and territorial integrity. He has also called for peaceful settlement for international conflicts away from any kind of interference in state’s internal affairs as to guarantee the sovereignty of law, preserve world peace and security and achieve hoped-for development in the world.

Al-Jaafrai, who was speaking yesterday during a Security Council open debate session titled “Preserving World Peace and Security and Respecting UN Charter Principles and Goals”, warned against imposing new non-consensual terms that contradict the UN charter. He criticized the very disturbing statements made by the UN Chief and representatives of some UN  permanent member states, pointing out that these statements aimed to promote the policy of interference in countries’ affairs under different pretexts that open the way for repeating scenarios of illegitimate military intervention in some member countries.

He clarified that military intervention in Libya under the pretext of protecting civilians has claimed the lives of more than 150 thousand people and Libya was turned into an epicenter of terrorism in the world.

The Syrian diplomat urged the United Nations, which won World War II and defeated fascism and racism, to repeat its victories and work seriously to defeat terrorism embodied in terrorist organizations like the so-called “Islamic State in Iraq and Levant” (ISIL), Jabhet Al-Nusra and other al-Qaida-linked terrorist groups in Syria and other parts of the world.

The situation in Syria and in some countries of the region reflects the regrettable situation of the United Nations organization as some member countries have used the organization’s platform to call for unprecedented flagrant interference in Syria’s internal affairs, incite violence and terrorism in the country, promote lies, demonize the Syrian government and hinder settlement efforts, said al-Jaafari.

He criticized the UN silence towards the continuous systematic violations by some governments against UN resolutions relating to fighting terrorism including resolutions Nos. 1267, 1373, 2170, 2178, 2199 and 2253.

Al-Jaafari also criticized the Security Council’s inaction to put an end to the aggression of the Turkish and Saudi regimes on Syria and its inability to preserve international peace and security.

“Repeated aggressive acts by the Turkish regime against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and its military intervention aim at supporting the terrorism it has been sponsoring inside the Syrian territories after depending many times on mercenaries and foreign terrorists, brought to Syria to shell Syrian Kurds areas and positions of the Syrian Arab army with heavy artillery,” he said.

He added that the Turkish regime continues to allow access to new extremist groups into Syria to support ISIL, Jabhet al-Nusra and other terrorist organizations and it has supplied the terrorists with chemical weapons as to be used against the Syrian government forces and civilians and to accuse the Syrian government of using them in a later stage.

According to al-Jaafari, these aggressive Turkish exercises came amid calls by the Saudi regime for military intervention in Syria under the pretext of fighting ISIL, the terrorist organization created and sponsored by the extremist Wahhabi regime of Saudi Arabia itself.

He stressed that world peace and security won’t be preserved as long as the Security Council and the United Nations keep silent over the Turkish and Saudi aggressive acts against Syria and over their support for terrorism.

He said that the UN should shoulder its responsibilities towards member states in accordance with its Charter as it is still the best available choice to confront huge challenges facing humanity.
