Enhancing cooperation between Syria and Iraq in the face of environmental challenges including drought and climate change was the main topic of today’s meeting between Prime Minister Hussein Arnous and the Iraqi Minister of Water Resources Aoun Diab Abdulah.
Arnous affirmed the Syrian government’s readiness to implement joint projects with the Iraqi side on water and using modern technologies to address the reality of scarcity of water resources due to drought and lack of rainfall during the past years.
For his part, the Iraqi minister expressed his country’s readiness to exchange expertise with the Syrian side and boost the bilateral cooperation in this regard to serve the common interest of the two brotherly countries.
The two sides stressed that all parties must to respect international agreements related to the construction of dams and the sharing of international river waters between upstream and downstream countries.
Moreover, Minister of Water Resources Hussein Makhlouf met with his Iraqi counterpart Aoun Diab Abdullah and discussed with him cooperation on common water issues in the Euphrates and Tigris rivers in light of common challenges.
The meeting dealt with cooperation on issues of the water situation of the Euphrates River, water resources management, confronting the challenges of climate change, and the effects of water scarcity.
