DAMASCUS, (ST)- Deputy Minister of Foreign Affaris and Expatriates Faysal al-Mikdad has stressed Syria’s readiness to continue the constructive and fruiful cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in order to provide as big assistance to the Syrians as possible.
During his meeting on Wednesday with the new Head of the ICRC in Syria Philip Spoerri, the successor of Marianne Gasser, al-Mikdad said that Syria respects the mandate of the international committee which has been committed to neutrality in its humanitarian mission and its nobel goals as well as the principles of International Humanitarian Law.
Al-Mikddad hailed Gasser’s efforts over the past eight years and affirmed the deep and vital cooperation between Syria and the ICRC that constituted a success story, because they were based on mutual confidence. He pointed out that this relation plus cooperation with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) have resulted in joint successes in the field of humanitarian work within the most difficult circumstances.
On his part, Spoerri highly appreciated the distinguished cooperation between Syria and the committee and hailed the activities held jointly between the ICRC and SARC which have witnessed notable development over the past years.
He pointed out that he will spare no effort as to consolidate the commitee’s activities and develop its programs in coordination and consultation with the Syrian government and in close cooperation with concerned Syrian parties.
