Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat announces his intention to run to succeed Johnson

London (ST): British Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat confirmed his intention to compete to succeed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, opening the candidacy race after the latter announced his resignation following several scandals and a series of failures in his government.

Johnson, 58, announced yesterday in front of his headquarters in “10 Downing Street” his resignation from the leadership of the ruling Conservative Party, saying: “It is clear that the will of the parliamentary bloc of the Conservative Party is to have a new leader for this party and therefore a new prime minister.”

The date for the start of the candidacy for the leadership of the party will be announced next week, after three turbulent years of rule during which Britain left the European Union and suffered from the Covid pandemic and the mounting scandals of Prime Minister Johnson.
