Conference on preserving “Damascene Iris” and the Syrian natural heritage held at Damascus University 

On the occasion of the World Environment Day and World Biodiversity Day, the works of the Environmental Scientific Conference was held yesterday at the Faculty of Science of the University of Damascus in cooperation with the National Union of Syrian Students and the Arab Center for Studies of Dry Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD).
The conference, titled “The Damascene Iris: Together to Preserve Our Identity and Natural Heritage” aims to bring together specialists and those interested in environmental affairs to exchange experiences, enhance environmental awareness, and highlight the importance of preserving Syrian natural heritage.
Over two days, participants will discuss several topics, including biodiversity, sustainable development, sustainable solutions to environmental challenges, endangered species and measures to preserve them, and documenting the natural heritage in Syria.
The President of the University of Damascus, Dr. Muhammad Osama Al-Jabban, explained in his speech during the opening of the conference the importance of the conference to exchange experiences and ideas on all environmental issues and problems, discuss the real challenges facing the environmental reality, and develop appropriate scientific solutions to them.
Dr. Nasr al-Din al-Obaid, Director General of the Arab Center for Studies of Dry Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD), said: The cooperation relations between the Center and the Ministry of Higher Education have strengthened and grown in recent years through bilateral cooperation agreements, which included various aspects of agricultural scientific research in a way that contributes to preserving our Syrian environment and its biodiversity.
During the opening lecture, Dr. Ahlam Maarouf, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science for Scientific Affairs, gave a presentation in which she explained that the Damascene iris is a plant threatened with extinction, and possesses characteristics that make it a Syrian symbol, “the Damascene iris”.
