Completion of restoration of the ancient Al-Khabiya market in old city of Aleppo

In cooperation with the United Nations Development Program, the Municipality of Aleppo completed the restoration work of the ancient Al-Khabiya market and repaired the damage caused as a result of terrorism. The market  includes 106 shops of sweets, foodstuffs, vegetables, stationery, school bags and shoes.

Eng. Ahmed Al-Shehabi, Director of the Old City of Aleppo, said in a statement to SANA reporter that the restoration work comes as part of Aleppo Municipality’s  plan to restore and rehabilitate Aleppo’s old markets. Aleppo Municipality began with the restoration of Al-Khabiya archaeological market, which is one of Aleppo’s most important ancient markets, taking into consideration the preservation of the market’s archaeological character.

Al-Shihabi pointed to the continuation of the implementation of the plans of the Old City of Aleppo to rehabilitate the markets with the aim of returning commercial activity to them.

 

Eng. Basil Al-Dhahir, the executor of Al-Khabiya Market Restoration Project, noted that the restoration work is carried out  in line with the urban identity of Aleppo old markets and by national hands and local experiences, pointing to the desire  of shop owners to reopen their stores and work again in a way that contributes to achieving the main objectives of the project, which is the return of commercial movement to the market.

A number of shop owners expressed their pleasure at returning to the market and working in their stores again. Other owners asked the concerned authorities to supply the market with electricity and telecommunication.
