Combating terrorism requires international credibility

From the very beginning of the crisis in Syria, Syria warned against takfiri terrorism which has been supported by some Arab and regional states. Syria’s vision proved to be right when it warned years ago about the threat of terrorism expanding to the entire region and the world. The latest developments in the region, especially in Iraq and Lebanon proved the soundness of Syria’s vision. Those who think that they’re safe from terrorism and extremism, whether they are from this region or elsewhere in the world, are totally mistaken.

Terrorism and extremism phenomena have no borders so they can threaten security in Europe and the whole world. The phenomena of terrorism and extremism are extending in the region, particularly in Syria and Iraq.  The Security Council resolution No. 2170, which imposes sanctions on those who fund and support the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and Jabhat al-Nusra, reflects the international community’s will to combat terrorism. The international coordination in this regard should be carried out via international agreements and resolutions that regulate it and any unilateral action would be considered interference in countries’ affairs.  However, some countries claim to be fighting terrorism while they fund, support, and sponsor it. These states should take into account that terrorism crosses borders and can’t be combated without international coordination.

Ironically, some permanent member states at the UN Security Council which expressed willingness to combat terrorism are the same states which support terrorism in Syria and Iraq and other parts of the world.

A plan was put in 2013 by the British Defense Ministry to train 100,000 terrorists to fight the Syrian army. Britain was deeply involved in the attacks and crimes committed in Syria. The British policy in this regard is foolish, and it must apologize for supporting armed groups and cooperate with Syria to combat terrorism. The British government adopts extremist opinions on Syria, it still believes or rather dreams that its pawns the Muslim Brotherhood and other violent jihadist takfiri groups are capable of realizing the change this government wants.

It is the US which is running the command center of the terrorist war against Syria and Iraq. The acts and practices of the terrorist groups in Syria, Iraq and other countries in the region are part of the strategy of world hegemony against the peoples of the region. This strategy has been used against countries which reject the American domination, as proved by the facts and events in the region.

What happened in Syria is an example of the attempts to undermine the revolutionary powers in the Islamic world and distract them with internal challenges away from threatening the interests of the imperialism and the Zionist entity. These attempts come within the scope of the Zionist American plots that are being accurately implemented. These attempts and the proxy war against Syria has failed, which has pushed the Americans to open a new front in Iraq to step up pressure on the resistance. Yet, the resistance won’t allow the enemy to cross the red lines. The US government’s allegations of assisting “moderate opposition” in Syria are a cover for Washington’s support for war on Syria. There is no moderate opposition, but a foreign-led jihadist war against the Syrian state. Washington’s use of the term “moderate opposition” is a smokescreen. The moderate opposition thing was just to get out of the realization that came up very quickly that they were funding al-Qaeda and its offshoots.

If there is a credible international stand towards combating terrorism in the region, the first thing the US and its allies should do is to stop funding the armed terrorist groups operating in Syria and Iraq. Secondly, they should cooperate with the Syrian government to eliminate terrorism in the region.
