An integrated archaeological project in the temple of “Baal Shamin” in Palmyra has been put on the short list of projects nominated for the 3rd cycle of the “ICCROM Sharjah” award related to the preservation and protection of cultural heritage in the Arab region 2020-2022.
The selection of the project called “Collart- Palmyre” by ICCROM’s office in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates came along with 15 projects from nine Arab countries chosen by the jury. This award is given once every two years and aims to honor and reward outstanding works that contribute to the protecting and revitalizing the tangible cultural heritage in the Arab region.
The project committee, which is composed of 7 distinguished Arab and international experts, divided the nominated projects into two main categories: buildings, heritage sites, and collections in cultural institutions such as museums and archives.
The project organizers confirm that after 3 years of research and work, they have been able to provide the community with many 3D models and a digital visualization tool, and nearly 5,000 thousand documents can be accessed and presented worldwide in English, German, French, Italian and Arabic.
In 2020, Syria won the ICCROM Sharjah Award for Good Practices in Preserving and Protecting Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region in its second session, through the restoration project of the Saqatiyah Archaeological Market in Old Aleppo, which was presented by the Aga Khan Foundation for Cultural Services in cooperation with the Syrian Trust Foundation for Development, Aleppo City Council and the General Directorate of Antiquities and museums, and the project has surpassed 14 Arab cultural projects.
