China: US is not in a position to accuse other countries over human rights

China stressed that the spread of violence, racism and human rights violations in the United States has become a systematic and long-term issue, and that the American authorities must find radical solutions to address its deteriorating situation.

Commenting on the US police violence and the killing of another African-American man by a white police officer in Michigan, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a press conference, “We are deeply concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in the United States. There are a large number of facts showing that racial discrimination, gun crime and violence during law enforcement are not just isolated and sporadic cases but rather long-term and systemic problems in the country.”

The Chinese spokesperson explained that since the killing of George Floyd in 2020 at the hands of the police, hundreds of ethnic minorities have been killed similarly by American law enforcement officers, noting that 93.7 percent of American Muslims said they live in the darkness of “Islamophobia”, while 81 percent of Asian American adults believe that violence against them is on the rise, while Hispanics, who make up 19 percent of the US population, own only 2 percent of American wealth.

The Chinese official added that the United States is not in a position to point the finger at other countries about their human rights situation, and the US should face its serious problems in this regard and think honestly about how to address the roots and causes of the deterioration of the human rights situation in the US society.

Wang pointed out that the United States is witnessing the most violent crimes in the world, referring to its rich history over the past 20 years of mass shootings amid the failure of the US federal government to enforce the gun control law. “The legal system in the United States has been structured to benefit the rich and to pardon them while punishing the poorest, especially ethnic minorities,” Wang noted.
