China’s Ambassador in Damascus Qi Qianjin has said that his country welcomes results of the fourth round of Geneva talks, stressing that war against terrorism must coincides with ceasefire deal and peace talks.
He told the Damascus-based al-Watan newspaper on Sunday that the Chinese government’s Special Envoy for the Syria Xie Xiaoyan had participated in Geneva talks because China hopes for continuity of Astana and Geneva talks to reach political solution to crisis in Syria.
“The Chinese government’s envoy asserted during Geneva talks that China supports peaceful solution in Syria and considers adherence to ceasefire deal and continuity of negotiations as priority,” the ambassador clarified, pointing out that all parties participating in Geneva talks are interested in China’s political role to find solution to crisis in Syria.
He pointed out that head of the Syrian delegation to Geneva talks, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari thanked China for its political stances and economic and humanitarian aid it offers to the Syrian state.
“China hopes that the Syrian government and opposition will reach solutions in service of the Syrian people and state,” the diplomat added, affirming that only the Syrians can decide their own destiny.
He called on the international community to offer aid and support to the Syrian government and talks. “China will play more active and positive role in the Syrian issue in order to protect the Syrian people’s interests,” he said.
The ambassador concluded by saying that fighting terrorism must coincides with ceasefire deal and peace talks.
Last Saturday, the fourth round of Geneva talks concluded with agreement on a four-basket agenda, including the issue of fighting terrorism, in accordance with UN resolution NO. 2254.
