China renews its refusal to politicize work of OPCW

China confirmed that Western countries that continue to present the so-called chemical file in Syria before the UN Security Council lack objectivity and politicize the work of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

“These Western actions undermine the authority of OPCW as well as the  mutual trust between the states parties,” Sun Zhiqiang, counselor of  the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, said during a Security Council session on Wednesday. He added that China “urges relevant countries to change course and stop politicizing the work of the organization.”

The Chinese counselor renewed his country’s call to the OPCW and its director-general to adhere to objectivity and impartiality, and to seek unity and cooperation between the state parties.

Zhiqiang noted that the Chemical Weapons Convention forms the basis for addressing issues related to chemical weapons, but in recent years some countries have completely ignored the provisions of the Convention regarding Syria.
