China Reiterates  Need To Respect Syria’s Sovereignty And Territorial Integrity

New York-(ST)- China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, reiterated the need to respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling on major countries to help calm tensions in the Middle East region and promote lasting peace.

Geng said in a briefing to the UN Security Council regarding the situation in Syria: “China expresses its deep concern over the continued Israeli attacks on Syria, which constitute a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” stressing his country’s commitment to reaching a political solution to the crisis in Syria through a process led and controlled by the Syrians.

Geng pointed out that terrorism poses a long-term threat to the stability of the situation in Syria, stressing China’s firm support for the Syrian government’s efforts to combat it, and calling on the international community to adhere to international law and reject double standards in combating this scourge.

Geng touched on the humanitarian and economic challenges facing Syria, calling on the international community to cooperate more closely and fulfill its financial obligations to continue humanitarian aid and support its economic recovery and development without delay, stressing that economic recovery and development are an essential path for Syria to overcome its humanitarian crisis.

The Chinese deputy delegate urged an end to unilateral sanctions and the illegal exploitation of Syrian resources, noting the negative effects of unilateral coercive measures on the humanitarian situation in this country.

Geng also called for an end to the illegal military presence of foreign forces in Syria, stressing China’s position on respecting national sovereignty and Syrian territorial integrity.
