China: Israel’s threat to Gaza with nuclear bombs is globally condemned and undermines efforts to establish a nuclear weapon free zone

China’s permanent Representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, said that Israel’s statement to use nuclear weapons in the Gaza Strip is irresponsible, universally condemned, and contradicts the international spirit of establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East.

Xinhua quoted Shuang as saying during the fourth session of the conference on establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East: “Nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction were a major factor in undermining peace and stability in the Middle East region,” pointing out that his country was shocked by the statements of officials in the Israeli occupation government, as these types of statements are irresponsible, universally condemned, and extremely disturbing.

Geng stressed that such statements contradict the international consensus that a nuclear war cannot be won and must not be fought, and contradict the international spirit of establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East and the overwhelming international calls to reduce escalation and protect civilians.

Geng expressed his country’s concern about the flagrant violations of the basic norms governing international relations, Pointing out that it is painful to witness the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, he pointed out that peace and security in the Middle East do not only affect the interests of the countries of the region, but also global stability, and that the international community should make greater efforts to support the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone and other weapons of mass destruction.

Geng pointed out that “some countries outside the Middle East region must abandon their narrow geopolitical interests and political manipulation, stop deliberately provoking confrontation in the region, and make practical contributions to maintaining regional security,” noting that maintaining the authority and effectiveness of the international nuclear non-proliferation regime is crucial.

Geng said: “In response to the current global and regional security dilemma, China believes that the international community must commit to a new path for security characterized by dialogue rather than confrontation, and partnership rather than alliances”.
