BEIJING- The International Conference on Syria (Geneva-2), scheduled to be held on January 22, 2014, will be an opportunity to solve the crisis in Syria, hoped China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Xinhua News Agency quoted Yi as saying last night in a phone conversation with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that “China hopes that all parties concerned will seize the chance to ensure holding Geneva conference on time and come up with positive results that help starting a political settlement in Syria as soon as possible so as to restore peace to the Syrian people and to the entire region.”
The Chinese minister stressed that his country appreciates the role being played by the United Nations and it will keep supporting the mediation efforts of UN Syria Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.
“China also is willing to continuously provide necessary support and assistance for the elimination of Syria’s chemical weapons,” he said.
For his part, Ki-moon, hailed China’s positive role aiming to solve the crisis in Syria, and expressed hope that Beijing will continue to support the international organization’s efforts in this respect.
