Catholicos of All Armenians Confident Peace, Security Will Be Restored to Syria

YEREVAN-His Holiness Karekin II, the Catholicos of All Armenians is confident that peace and security will be restored to the blessed Syrian land and that the Syrian people including the Armenian component will live in peace and take part in rebuilding and developing Syria.

“We feel pain and are greatly concerned over the developments in Syria, but we are sure that the Syrian people will live in peace and build its own future,” Catholicos Karekin II said in an interview with the Syrian TV on Saturday.

He added that the “Turkish authorities keeps rejecting political solution to the crisis in Syria,” urging all countries of the world to play an effective role in attaining peace in Syria and in helping the Armenians, who were displaced from Syria to return to the country and live safely.

“Armenians in Syria will continue to live in this country and contribute to its development. They will preserve their Syrian identity and help maintain the country’s national heritage and sanctities,” he said.

He pointed out that the brotherly relations between Syria and Armenia are based on friendship and cooperation, stressing the need to boost these ties through mutual visits.

Catholicos Karekin II clarified that a large number of Armenians settled in Syria in 1915, after the genocide which they were exposed to by the Ottomans. They were welcomed and accorded special care in the country and were able to preserve their Armenian culture, national identity and spiritual belief. They deserved the Syrian citizenship thanks to their participation in the development of the Syrian society.

“We believe that one day the Turkish people and authorities will recognize the genocide committed against the Armenians and that justice will be attained to ease the Armenian people’s loss,” he said.

Karikin II pointed out that the Armenian churches in Syria were destroyed by the extremists and terrorists in the country, urging the world to condemn the terrorists’ crimes and support the Syrian government to restore peace and security to the country so as the Armenian can return to Syria.
