BRICS Reiterates Support for Syria’s Sovereignty, Urges Peaceful Settlement

MOSCOW, (ST)-The deputy foreign ministers of BRICS countries have reiterated their firm support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. They have also called for attaining a peaceful solution to the crisis in the country by the Syrians themselves.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday assessing BRICS deputy foreign ministers’ meeting on Friday that “the deputy foreign ministers of the BRICS countries were deeply concerned over the continuity of the crisis in Syria, the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country and the growing danger of international terrorism and extremism there. They stressed their firm support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, urged peaceful solution to the crisis and called on concerned parties to implement Security Council resolutions.”

According to the statement, the deputy ministers urged resuming efforts aiming to attain diplomatic and political settlement in Syria through wide dialogue based on “Geneva Statement” of June 30, 2012 without preconditions. They referred to the positive results of the two Inter-Syrian Moscow consultative meetings and to the efforts exerted by the UN Chief’s Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura as to resume the Geneva process.

The Russian Foreign Ministry statement pointed out that the deputy foreign ministers of BRICS condemned all forms of terrorism and urged all the Syrians to be united as to face terrorism danger. They also called on the international community to enforce the Security Council Resolutions Nos. 2170, 2178 and 2199.
