BRICS leaders reaffirm commitment to Syria’s, sovereignty and territorial integrity

BRAZILIA, (ST)- Leaders of the BRICS states ( Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) have renewed their commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In the final statement of their summit in the Brazilian capital on Thursday, the leaders said “we call on all parties to guarantee unimpeded provision of humanitarian aid and show complete and sustainable commitment to ceasefire in Idleb province that excludes the terrorist groups and organizations blacklisted by the Security Council.”

They expressed support for creating the constitutional committee on Syria and hailed the efforts exerted by the United Nations, the guarantor states of Astana process and some other countries to contribute to finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

The BRICS leaders called for joining international counter-terrorism efforts under the UN’s umbrella and pursuant to international laws. They noted the need to adopt an integrated policy for effectively fighting terrorism and urged all countries to commit themselves to prohibiting the funding of terrorist networks and activities.

They voiced their support for the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) as an effective means for chemical weapons disarmament and nonproliferation. They also stressed the need to hold multilateral negotiations on an international agreement to combat chemical and biological terrorism.
