Brazil called for not suspending funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees UNRWA in light of the tragic circumstances taking place in the besieged Gaza Strip.
The RT website quoted the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying in a statement published on its website: “The accusations leveled by Israel against UNRWA employees should not lead to a reduction in the necessary contribution to its activities in the light of the serious humanitarian crisis in Gaza.”
The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added: The decision of Western countries to suspend funding to the agency comes “at the expense of implementing the recent decision of the International Court of Justice regarding the necessity of ensuring the access of humanitarian aid to the citizens of Gaza, which will have serious consequences on the dire humanitarian situation.”
The United States, Finland, Britain, Australia, Canada, Germany and a number of other Western countries announced the cessation of funding to the agency, while the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, called on countries not to allow UNRWA’s work to stop, especially since the Agency is facing a major crisis without renewed funding.
