Borrell admits: our support for Ukraine stems from our own interests not out of love for the Ukrainian people
High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, acknowledged that the generous support provided by the Western countries for Ukraine stems from their own interests and not out of their love for the Ukrainian people.
Borrell said in an interview with the American television channel CNN “If Russia wins the war, the interests of the UA and Europe will be severely damaged. The matter is not out of generosity, and it is not related to the support of Kiev, because we love the Ukrainian people, but because this is in our interest, and in the interest of the United States as a global player”.
Borrell said earlier: “If Russia wins in Ukraine, this will have serious consequences for America and the existing system of alliances around it and around Europe. In such a scenario, no country can be confident that Washington will come to the aid of any ally under attack”.
In addition, Borrell considered that the idea of dissolving the armed forces of all European Union member states in order to create a single pan European army, is unrealistic and unachievable”. He added” it is a fantasy to abandon 21 armies in order to create one army”, calling for more realistic thinking and better communication between European Union countries.
Last January, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Taiani called on the European Union to form a unified European army, entrusted with the tasks of maintaining peace and preventing conflicts in Europe.
