London Mayor Boris Johnson has added his voice to Russia’s warnings against arming “rebels” in Syria , saying the move would be disastrous because it would be tantamount to “pressing weapons into the hands of maniacs.”
He called on the British government to stop seeing Syria as “an arena for muscle-flexing” and open its eyes to immediate dangers, such as effectively gearing up the “Al-Qaeda”.
“This is the moment for a total ceasefire, an end to the madness,” Mayor Johnson said. “It is time for the US, Russia, the EU, Turkey, Iran, Saudi and all the players to convene an intergovernmental conference to try to halt the carnage. We can’t use Syria as an arena for geopolitical point-scoring or muscle-flexing, and we won’t get a ceasefire by pressing weapons into the hands of maniacs.”
This warning came after several leading figures opposed any move by UK PM David Cameron to join US President Barack Obama in helping the” rebel forces” fighting the Syrian governmebt.
Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the UK for mulling greater assistance to “rebels” who he said “eat the organs” of their enemies.
This statement refers to a shocking video that showed a Syrian “rebel” slicing out the heart of a slain soldier and taking a big bite out of it, before declaring “hopefully we will slaughter all of them.”
The UK’s Deputy PM Nick Clegg also cautioned Cameron against sending lethal weapons to the so-called Free Syrian Army, pointing out Britain would have already done so if it were a good idea.
A similar warning came from the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, who warned the government to “tread very warily.”
The former head of the Royal Army, Lord Dannatt, stressed that providing Syrian “rebels” with weapons could evolve into a “much larger intervention”.
Cameron is facing a “growing political opposition” at home, The Telegraph reports, with many people being increasingly unhappy about his apparent intent to join the Americans in helping “rebels ” in Syria .
These warnings come as leaders of Russia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US are preparing to meet in Northern Ireland’s Loch Earn resort to discuss urgent global issues. However the G8 summit is expected to be dominated by the Syrian conflict that has escalated to a civil war over two years.
Meanwhile Alaska’s Ex-Gov. Sarah Palin also bashed President Obama over his decision to arm Syrian “militants”.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the Faith and Freedom Coalition on Saturday she said: “Until we have a commander in chief who knows what he is doing… let Allah sort it out!”
