Bogdanov: Talks with Leader Al-Sharaa affirmed the deep-rooted Syrian-Russian historical relations

Following his meeting with Leader of the New Syrian Leadership in Damascus, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said in a statement “The talks with the Syrian Leadership, represented by Ahmed Al-Sharaa, were held in a constructive atmosphere, and they emphasized the depth of the historical relations between the two countries and their continuity”.

“Russian-Syrian relations are strategic based on friendship and common interests, and they have not been affected by the political changes in both countries over the past decades,” he added.

Bogdanov stressed that Russia confirmed its readiness to contribute to the stability of the situation in Syria by supporting economic and social solutions that come through national dialogue between various political forces.

“The discussions touched on joint economic cooperation, including major projects that Russia has contributed to building, such as power plants and infrastructure, with an emphasis on continuing work in these areas,” Bogdanov indicated.

He also said “The Syrian leadership intends to form a transitional government after Ramadan, along with drafting a new constitution within three years and holding elections within four years, which aims to achieve political stability.”

He pointed out that the Russian facilities in Syria, such as the Tartus and Hmeimim bases, have not been affected by recent events, with both sides stressing the importance of preserving Russian assets and enhancing cooperation in this area.

“The future of Russia’s investments in Tartous Port was also discussed. The Russian side expressed readiness to continue working there and modernizing the port despite the challenges faced by the Russian company responsible for the project, Bogdanov concluded.
