Bogdanov, Haddad: political Solution in Syria via National Dialogue without External Interference

MOSCOW, (ST) – Special Representative of the Russian President for the Middle East and African countries, and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed with, Syria’s Ambassador in Moscow Dr. Riad Haddad yesterday the political solution to the crisis in Syria, including Russian efforts to continue the consultative meeting in Moscow.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that ” the stability of the positions of Moscow and Damascus was stressed, provided for a political solution in Syria through a broad national dialogue aimed at achieving a comprehensive agreement between the Syrians, without outside interference and on the basis of Geneva 1 statement, issued on June 30th 2012 “.

The Russian Foreign Ministry statement said that “during the meeting, comprehensive exchange of views was made in connection with the situation in Syria and around, and attention was paid to the question of resolving the crisis in Syria, including in the efforts made by the Russian side to continue Moscow-operation.”

However, meetings of the preliminary consultative sessions were concluded on January 19th between the Syrian government delegation and the delegation representing opposition figures by an agreement between the Syrian delegation and five opposition parties and other figures on a set of principles proposed by Russia under the name Moscow principles. The said principles focused on the preservation of Syria’s sovereignty, its unity, fighting against terrorism in all its forms, resolving the crisis by peaceful political means, rejecting any foreign interference and keeping the army and the armed forces as a symbol of national unity as well as the state establishments.
