Birds fall in love too

Humans are typically choosy when it comes to picking a partner and often only settle down and have children after a long screening process.

Now researchers have found that true love makes more successful parents, too.

Zebra finches allowed to choose their own partners were shown to be more diligent in bringing up their young than birds matched by scientists.

Zebra finches share many characteristics with humans such as mating monogamously for life and sharing the burden of parental care.

Female finches choose mates in a way that is specific to the individual and there is little consensus among females as to who the ‘cutest’ male is.
