Berri calls on the Lebanese Parliament to elect a president on January 9

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri called for a parliamentary session to elect a president on January 9.
The Lebanese National News Agency quoted Berri as saying at the beginning of the legislative session that opened today: “I had vowed to myself that immediately after the ceasefire, I would set a date for a session to elect a president, and I am announcing from now on that a session will be set for January 9.”
Since the end of former President Michel Aoun’s term on October 31, 2022, the Lebanese Parliament has failed in thirteen sessions to elect a president, due to the lack of a legal quorum in light of the lack of agreement between the political blocs on the candidates.
