Beijing: Washington’s manipulation will not change the fact that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China
China asserted that the US Department of State’s manipulation of the US position on Taiwan on the Department’s website will not change the fact that there is only one China and that Taiwan is part of it.
The US Department of State’s website, in its section on Taiwan, removed language containing the phrases: “not support Taiwan independence” and “recognizing Beijing’s position that Taiwan is part of China” and added language on “six safeguards” in reference to six security guarantees that the Donald Reagan administration provided to Taiwan. The guarantees were declassified in 2020, including that Washington did not set a date for ending arms sales to Taiwan and did not agree to prior consultation with Beijing on these sales.
Reuters quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian as telling reporters that this “political manipulation” will not succeed in changing the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and the fact that there is only one China and Taiwan is a part of it… and that the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the entire country.
Lijian indicated that the United States changing of its fact sheet on US-Taiwan relations is “a mere frivolous act aimed at emptying the one-China principle of its true content,” and that “this kind of political manipulation is an attempt to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and will inevitably lead to a fire that will only burn the United States.”
