VIENNA, (ST) – Austria has stressed that sending weapons to the “Syrian opposition” will greatly complicate the mission of the Austrian unit working within the United Nations Disintegration Observer Forces in the Syrian Golan.
AFP quoted Austria’s Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger as saying on Tuesday following a cabinet session: If we lifted the embargo on sending arms to the Syrian opposition the unit’s mission will face many troubles.”
Austria’s Chancellor and Chairman of the Social and Democratic Party Werner Faymann said that “today in Syria there are enough quantities of weapons.”
Last week Spindelegger warned the 26 European states against arming the so-called “Syrian opposition”.
Austria’s President Heinz Fischer has recently stressed that the Austrian UNDOF unit is staying in the Syrian Golan “despite hard circumstances”, pointing out that this unit is carrying out a “very necessary” mission to keep peace and stability.
