At The Voice of Global South Summit….Mikdad stresses the need to strengthen solidarity among states to uphold the principles of international law

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr. Faisal Mikdad participated (via video) in the work of the second “Voice Global South Summit” held in India today in the presence of a number of senior officials and foreign ministers of a number of countries of the world.

The participants in the summit stressed their position on the need to strengthen cooperation between the countries of the South, encourage inter-relations, increase investments and contribute to the preparation of programs that help achieve sustainable development between these countries.

Minister Mikdad said in a speech at the beginning of the session opened by Indian Foreign Minister G. Shankar: “our world today is witnessing an increase in conflicts, terrorist acts, economic crises, hate and racism speech, at the same time we are witnessing an effort by some Western countries that have been entrusted with a primary responsibility in maintaining international peace and security, through their membership in the Security Council”. “These countries are trying to replace the principles of the charter with what they called the “rules-based system”, which are rules set by Western countries to serve their interests, and abandoned many of them when they conflicted with those interests,” he said.

Minister Mikdad added: ”We have witnessed a clear example of this policy pursued by the collective West regarding the actions of the Israeli occupation authorities in the Occupied Palestinian territories, especially in the Gaza Strip, which has become a cemetery for children, under a false pretext based on a distorted and misleading interpretation of the right of self-defense, which the occupier cannot invoke.

Minister Mikdad pointed out that today we need more than ever to strengthen solidarity among our countries to uphold the principles of international law, the provisions of the UN Charter, and common human and civilized values, and to affirm that international peace and security will be achieved only by fulfilling the promise of the United Nations to spare humanity the scourge of war and enhance cooperation to achieve the goals of sustainable development.

Minister Mikdad said: “We are called upon to assume our collective responsibilities towards future generations through our joint work to meet the challenges facing our nations, finding solutions to them, or mitigating their effects, and building a new multipolar world order that balances international relations, including through the reform of international institutions, notably international financial bodies, and the alignment of their work with the needs and interests of the South and to achieve genuine sustainable development that guarantees the benefit and well-being of all the peoples of the world “.

Minister Mikdad reiterated Syria’s thanks to India and the countries that have stood by the Syrian people over the past years, after the devastating earthquake disaster that the country witnessed last February, adding: “We look forward to your continued support for Syria in its efforts to overcome the effects of the terrorist war, and to end the illegal foreign military presence on its territory, and in our demand for the immediate, complete and unconditional lifting of illegal unilateral coercive measures.

The summit concluded with a statement delivered by Indian Foreign Minister G. Shankar, in which he stressed on behalf of the participants the importance of this summit and the points put forward by the participants that reflected the views and concerns of the countries of the south and the need to mobilize joint efforts to ensure progress and sustainable development of all countries of the South.
