Astana Ready to Host “Technical Meeting” on Syria

ASTANA, (ST)- Kazakhstan is again ready, if needed, to host a “technical meeting” on Syria at the experts level , according to the Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tileuberdi.

The Russian news Agency Itar Tass quoted Tileuberdi as saying to reporters “we are waiting for some information which haven’t come yet, as Geneva talks are still ongoing, so, based on the progress of these talks, the need for holding technical meetings in Astana  will be assessed.”

He clarified that “after Geneva talks are concluded it will be clear what issues should be discussed in the technical meetings, be they the cessation of hostilities or the guarantees of complying with ceasefire.”

The Kazakh diplomat reiterated that his country is always ready to ensure a platform for international meetings aiming to solve the crisis in Syria.

On January 23 and 24, the Kazakh Capital Astana hosted the first meeting on Syria.  The communiqué of the meeting affirmed commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. Astana also hosted another meeting on Syrian settlement on February 16th during which the parties discussed  fixing the cessation of hostilities in the country.
