Assassination of President of Donetsk People’s Republic a Cowardly Terrorist Act: Syria

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Syria has slammed the cowardly  terrorist act of assassinating President  Alexander Zakharchenko of Donetsk People’s Republic, stressing that such a crime threatens that region’s security and stability.

“The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist act which led to the assassination of the President of Donetsk People’s Republic Alexander Zakharchenko. This cowardly act is an attempt to undermine the peaceful settlement process in Donbass region and to hinder the implementation of Minsk agreements,”  a ministry official source told SANA on Saturday.

 “The assassination of Donetsk People’s Republic President, who is one of signatories to the Minsk Document for solving the conflict in Donbass, is a cowardly act that threatens security and stability in that region,” the source said.

The source expressed the ministry’s deep condolences to the family of the late president and wished speedy recovery to the wounded persons and all who got hurt, calling for conducting an urgent investigation into the crime and for punishing perpetrators as well as the parties behind this terror act.

The source concluded by stressing that adopting terrorist methods to achieve political goals is a condemned behavior that is morally and legally unacceptable according to the international law and the international resolutions on fighting terrorism, urging an immediate halt of such terrorist methods.
