MOSCOW, (ST) _ High Representative of the European Union EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Catherine Ashton, stressed EU cling to a political solution to the crisis in Syria.
The Russian today site quoted Ashton as saying in the wake of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels yesterday “the EU did not lose hope in convening the International Conference on Syria in Geneva, and is intended to continue inviting interested parties to participate in it.”
Ashton stressed the need to work to define a framework of dialogue in Syria noting , “we must not be afraid of the task ahead and must do everything we can in order to reach the result, otherwise ,the current situation will continue and lead to the destruction of the country.”
She indicated that the situation in Syria had an important deal of discussions of the EU ministers’ meeting, although no documents were issued in this regard.
She continued she recently contacted the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to discuss this issue,” noting that the UN Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi is making his best for the political process.
She stressed that the situation in Syria will continue to deteriorate in the absence of the political process.
During a meeting in Baghdad in June with the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki Ashton that the international conference to be held on Syria is an opportunity to find a peaceful solution to the crisis.
