Army Completes First Phase of Military Operations against Terrorists in Syrian Desert, Reaches Borders with Iraq

DAMASCUS, (ST)- The Syrian Arab army units in cooperation with allied forces completed the first phase of military operations in the Syrian Badia (desert) and reached the borders with Iraq in northeastern al-Tanf area, the General Command of the Army and armed Forces announced on Satruday, pointing out that the army controlled many strategic sites and points in the depth of the badia.

 In a statement, the command stressed that “the arrival of our forces and allies at the Syrian-Iraqi borders is a strategic turning point in the war on terrorism and it forms a base to expand military operations in the desert and along the borders with the brotherly country of Iraq, to tighten the siege on the terrorists of Daesh in the region and to cut off supply routes of the terror organization.

 The command renewed warning of the danger of the so-called international coalition’s repeated attacks against  the Syrian army and its incessant attempts to block the progress of Syrian army and its allies in the war on terrorism.

It affirmed the army’s determination to continue the fight against Daesh, Jabhat  al-Nusra and other affiliated terrorist groups and to restore security and stability to the entire Syrian territory.

A military source told SANA on Friday that the Syrian Arab Army units reached the Syrian-Iraqi borders northeast of al-Tanf in the depths of the Syrian desert,.

The source said that army units, in cooperation with allies, continued their successful military operations in the Syrian desert and managed on Friday afternoon to reach the Syrian-Iraqi borders northeast of al-Tanf and established positions in the area after eliminating all remaining pockets of ISIS terrorists in that direction.

On June 6th and May 18th, the US-led international coalition attacked advanced Syrian Arab Army positions on al-Tanf road in the eastern countryside of Homs province in an attempt to prevent the army from reaching the borders.
