Armenian President to al-Lahham: We support Syria in combating terrorism and our stances will never change

YEREVAN, (ST)_ Armenia’s President has underscored that his country’s stance towards Syria will never change, expressing his pride of historic ties between the Syrian and Armenian peoples.

“The relations between Syrian and Armenian peoples are strong and they will never change…Syria will achieve victory over terrorism and it will restore its leading role in consolidating peace and stability in the region and in the whole world as well,” Serge Sarkisian said.

His remarks came during his today’s meeting with Speaker of the Syrian People’s Assembly [Parliament] Mohammad Jihad al-Lahham in Yerevan, Armenia’s capital.

According to a press release obtained today by the Syriatimes e-newspaper, al-Lahham reiterated the solidarity of Syrian leadership, people and army with the Republic of Armenia and the friendly Armenian people in the 100 anniversary of the Armenian genocide, calling on the whole world to respect peoples’ rights far away from extremist ideologies and isolationism.  

The Speaker, who is heading a parliamentary delegation in the ‘Social and Political Forum Against the Crime of Genocide’, added that Syrian people and government highly appreciate the stances of the Republic of Armenia that support Syria in facing the Takfiri terrorism and political and economic pressures put by colonial countries.

He indicated that Syria is open to international cooperation within the framework of the UN resolutions in counterterrorism.  

“Syria is moving towards victory and defeating terrorism,” al-Lahham affirmed.

On his part, Head of the Armenian National Assembly Galust Sahakyan stressed that the Armenian people will never forget that Syrian people embraced them during the genocide that was perpetrated by Turkey 100 years ago.

“Today, Turkey re-perpetrates the genocide through supporting terrorists, who are killing the Syrian people,”  Sahakyan said, adding that Syria and its people are locked in a heroic war against terrorism.

Sahakyan’s remarks were made during his meeting with the Syrian speaker.

The meeting dealt with the bilateral parliamentary ties, ways of expanding parliamentary cooperation at bilateral and international levels in order to enhance parliaments’ role in putting an end to some countries’ support for violence and terrorism in other countries.

Another meeting was held between al-Lahham and the Armenian Foreign Minister over common causes, especially terrorism that hits Syria.  

There was also another meeting held at the Syrian Embassy in Yerevan.

The meeting was attended by the Personal Representative of the Armenian President accompanied by several members of the Armenian National Assembly and Deputy Foreign Minister.

The members of the Armenian National Assembly condemned the terror crimes being perpetrated by the armed terrorist groups that are supported by some western and regional countries, especially Turkey.

They asserted that they are working at international and regional parliamentary levels to unveil the international involvement in supporting terrorism in Syria.

The members denounced Turkey’s blatant intervention in Syria’s affairs through supporting terrorists, stressing the need for pressing the countries that are involved in supporting terrorism to stop violating the international laws and moral principles.
