Armenia has historic friendship with Syria and close positions on various issues

Damascus, (ST) – The Syrian-Armenian relations are characterized as friendly relations in a reflection of the deep-rooted history between the two countries and as a result of similar positions on various human, cultural and political issues in a way that serves the interests of the peoples of the two countries and safeguards the principles of maintaining international peace and security, respecting the sovereignty of states and not interfering in their internal affairs.

On the 21st of September, Armenia celebrates the 29th anniversary of its national day, while history records the stance of the Syrian people with the Armenians who were displaced by the Ottoman occupation from their areas in Cilicia and Trabzon and others, thus becoming a component of the Syrian people.

On the 13th of February this year, the People’s Assembly adopted a resolution condemning and recognizing the genocide committed against the Armenians by the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Armenia supported Syria and its people in their war against terrorism and its embassy continued to operate during the years of the crisis.

With the aim of strengthening cooperation, the two countries set up economic committees and set legal rules for their work, as they are bound by about 60 agreements in the fields of trade, culture and education, among which is an educational executive program in higher education under which student scholarships are exchanged either to study the Arabic language in Syria or for Syrians to pursue higher studies in Armenian universities.

The Republic of Armenia is located in the Caucasus region at the confluence of the continents of Asia and Europe. It covers an area of 347.92 square kilometers, and it is part of historical Armenia, which has an area of more than 300 thousand km.
