Washington (ST): Armed confrontations erupted yesterday between the US security men and the outgoing president Donald Trump’s supporters who broke into the Capitol building. The CNN news network said that the hall, where the US Senate was holding a meeting, was evacuated. The senators were asked to wear masks and bend under their seats after the arrival of demonstrators in the hall.
Meanwhile, New York Times newspaper quoted an official in Virginia State as saying that the national guard in the state along with 200 soldiers were dispatched to the capital Washington.
Earlier, the Washington Post newspaper said that the US Defence Department rejected a request from officials in the capital to deploy the national guard in the Congress building.
Trump’s supporters broke into the capital’s house as the Senate was meeting to endorse the presidential elections results.
Following Trump’s call on his supporters to head towards the Congress to cancel the results of the Presidential elections, which was won by his democratic rival Joe Biden, crowds of demonstrators flocked to the Capitol and clashed with the security forces pushing the congress to suspend its joint session dedicated to endorse the results of the presidential elections.
The US police demanded all workers in the Congress to evacuate their offices. Some US mass media said that some officials were obliged to flee through underground tunnels.
