Arab Summit Convenes in Amman, No Momentous Resolutions Expected

DEAD SEA, Jordan, (ST)- The 28th Arab summit currently held in the Jordanian Capital Amman have brought nothing new as regards the stagnating Arab situation, rather it was a new version of previous summits amid the absence of an effective Arab role in fighting terrorism and the absence of any condemnation of the Gulf regimes which keep supporting terrorism and cover up its crimes, a report by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said on Wednesday.

Given the ongoing intra-Syrian talks in Geneva, some Arab leaders called for supporting these talks and stress the importance of reaching a political solution that preserves Syria’s unity, sovereignty and independence.

The Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said during the opening ceremony of the summit that “recent weeks witnessed positive development represented in the resumption of Geneva talks on Syria and in reaching an agreement on an objective agenda”.

He stressed that “political solution in Syria is the only way to achieve the Syrian people’s legitimate aspirations, to maintain Syria’s unity and territorial integrity, to preserve its national institutions, to eliminate terrorism and the danger of extremist organizations and to ensure suitable circumstances  as to start reconstruction in the country.”

Mauritanian President Mohammad wild Abdul Azizi, on his part, said “the terrorist groups are active in Syria and they are causing huge destruction”, urging more efforts by all parties to fix the cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria and attain a political solution that preserves the unity of the Syrian people and sovereignty of the Syrian state over its lands.

On their parts, Presidents of Lebanon, Sudan, and Tunisia in addition to the Algerian Council of the Nation urged adopting dialogue to reach political settlement in Syria and to maintain the unity of the Syrian territories.

From his position as a key supporter of terrorist organizations, namely Jabhat al-Nusra and Daesh, Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani continued to play his flagrant role in covering up terrorism and the terrorist groups’ crimes against the Syrian people.

As usual, the Palestinian cause was present in only in the Arab leaders’ speeches not in their actions given the disability of the divided Arab system to adopt a unified honorable stance that satisfies the Arab peoples or helps restore part of the Arab League’s position in the hearts of the Arabs, particularly after the disaster this league has inflicted upon the Libyan people.

In recent months, there have been calls from some Arab countries to restore Syria’s Arab league membership, which has been suspended since 2011.

Last year, Syria affirmed that it didn’t even think of returning to the Arab League as long as this body stayed as an hostage of some countries known of conspiring on Syria and of being responsible for the state of weakness and division in the Arab world.

Closing Statement

According to media reports, the one-day Arab Summit issued a closing statement that stressed that “the crisis in Syria cannot be ended militarily, calling for a political process that preserves Syria’s integrity.”

The statement affirmed support for Iraq in confrontation of terrorism and hailed the Iraqi government’s fight against terrorism.

The Palestinian people’s right to establish an “independent state” was highlighted in the statement, which also renewed call on the Israeli occupation to withdraw  from all occupied Arab lands to the 1967 lines.

Arab Summits have never reached any practical resolutions that can end any of the regional crises as some of the Arab countries have directly contributed to the crises hitting the region.
