The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) has condemned the Turkish regime’s continuous aggressive practices towards Syria, particularly the repeated and deliberate attempts to cut off water supplies to the Syrian citizens in Hasakah. It stressed that these practices violate human rights and the principles of the International Humanitarian Law.
In a statement on Saturday, the IAPU expressed deep concern over the Turkish regime’s repeated aggressive acts against the Syrian people in the areas bordering Turkey, mainly cutting off water supplies, thereby depriving more than a million citizens in Hasakah from drinking water, especially in the light of the extraordinary and critical health circumstances imposed by corona pandemic in addition to the unprecedented high temperature in this area.
The IAPU stressed that this Turkish inhuman behavior has catastrophic impacts on the locals’ health as it deprives the citizens in Hasakah from their legitimate and human right to have access to potable water.
The Union renewed its call on the Turkish regime to stop its aggressive behavior, respect good neighborhood relationship and principles and act wisely to re-operate Allouk water station at full capacity.
The Union also urged the international community to immediately interfere to end the humanitarian tragedy in Hasakah and to force the Turkish regime to comply with the provisions of the Geneva Fourth Convention and with the principles of the international law on human rights concerning the protection of civilians’ rights in the times of war, particularly the right to get potable water.
The IAPU affirmed its support for all the national, Arab and regional efforts exerted with the aim of solving the crisis in Syria in a way that achieves peace, security and stability in this strategic spot of the world. It also stressed support for reaching a political solution in Syria that restores Syria’s key role in the Arab region and the world, preserves its sovereignty and territorial integrity and guarantees stability and security to the Syrian citizens.
