Arab Parliament adopts a document for achieving safe employment of Artificial Intelligence

The 6th Conference of the Arab Parliament has adopted a document, titled “Arab Parliamentary Vision on Achieving Safe Employment of Artificial Intelligence”, with the aim of submitting it to the Arab leaders at the coming Arab Summit due to be held in Bahrain in May, 2024.

Speakers of the Arab Parliaments, including the Syrian People’s Assembly, took part in the conference.

The document included several recommendations that contribute to the governance of the uses of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Arab countries, including approving an advanced legislative structure to set controls on the uses of AI.

The document called for developing national strategies and plans to regulate the uses of artificial intelligence and stressed the necessity of establishing early warning systems to continuously assess the risks of artificial intelligence, as well as enhancing society’s awareness about the challenges and risks of artificial intelligence.

The document called for localizing artificial intelligence industry in Arab countries, in addition to employing artificial intelligence in Arab parliamentary work. It noted the importance of participating in international efforts to reach a binding international agreement to regulate the uses of artificial intelligence.

Head of the Syrian delegation to the conference, MP Suleiman Al-Abrash, said that Syria supports the document on safe employment of Artificial Intelligence, pointing out that Syria has taken important steps to develop a national strategy in this regard.

He noted the obstacles that face Syria in the process of using Artificial Intelligence and developing the related equipment, mainly the unilateral coercive measures unjustly imposed by the West and are being practiced on a daily basis against Syria, in addition to the terrorist war waged on the country. He stressed that the Syrian people, despite the difficult circumstances, are determined to build a new Syria.
