Arab League Foreign Ministers Condemn Turkish Aggression on Syrian Territories, Vow Urgent Measures to Confront It

CAIRO, (ST)-  The Arab League’s foreign ministers have condemned the Turkish aggression on the Syrian territories and decided to consider urgent measures to confront it.

In the final communique issued at the conclusion of their emergency meeting in Cairo, the Arab foreign ministers stressed that the Turkish aggression on the Syrian territories is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and the Security Council’s Resolutions and it poses a serious threat to Arab national security as well as to international peace, according to the Syrian News Agency SANA.

The ministers reiterated Syria’s right to confront this aggression, calling on the international community to act immediately to stop the Turkish invasion and force the Turkish troops to withdraw from the Syrian territories.

They held the Turkish regime responsible for the spread  of terrorism and the regrouping of Daesh terrorists.

 They rejected any Turkish attempt to impose demographic changes in Syria and reiterated Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Earlier, Reuters reported that the Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit lambasted Turkey’s military operation in northeast Syria as an “invasion of an Arab state’s land and an aggression on its sovereignty.”

Reading from the meeting’s final communique, Aboul Gheit said that the Arab League will consider taking measures against Turkey in the economic, investment and cultural sectors, and include tourism and military cooperation, according to Reuters.

He also called on the U.N. Security Council to “take the necessary measures to stop the Turkish aggression and force Turkey to withdraw from the Syrian territory immediately”.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali al-Hakim, president of the current Arab League session, said that the aggression “will exacerbate humanitarian crises, increase the suffering of the Syrian people, and strengthen the ability of terrorists to reorganize their remnants,” Alhakim said.

Al-Hakim and Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil called on the League to reinstate Syria’s membership in the Arab body, Reuters said
