The Arab Group at the Security Council plus three African member states of the Council condemned the repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, calling for their cessation and for Israel to comply with the international law.
Libyan Ambassador to the United Nations Taher El-Sunni, in a statement during a Security Council session today on behalf of the Arab Group, expressed the Arab states’ condemnation of the repeated military escalation by the Israeli occupation forces against Syria, a flagrant violation of international law and the UN Charter, and a threat to the security and peace of the entire region.
He noted that these attacks represent part of the series of attacks aimed at undermining Syria’s security, endangering the lives of civilians, and threatening regional and international efforts to support stability in the region.
Al-Sunni explained that these attacks are not only a violation of Syria’s sovereignty and a threat to its unity and territorial integrity, but also a blatant disregard for relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolutions 242, 338, and 497, which call for an end to the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan. They also represent a flagrant violation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and a clear violation of the mandate of the United Nations forces operating in the area.
Al-Sunni expressed the Arab Group’s condemnation in the strongest terms of these attacks and its demand that the international community, and the Security Council in particular, assume their legal and moral responsibilities to pressure the Israeli occupation entity to immediately cease its aggression, comply with international law, and fully and unconditionally withdraw from the occupied Syrian territories, including the areas into which it has recently entered in a bid to exploit the current circumstances in Syria.
