Any Dialogue on Syria Should be in Consultation with Syrian government, People, Says Velayati

Head of the Strategic Research Center of the Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati said on Monday that any political dialogue in connection with Syrian fate should be through consultation with the government and people of the country.

Velayati made the remarks in a meeting with Russian president’s special envoy on Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev.

He underlined durable, strategic and all-out ties between Iran and Russia, while discussing regional and international issues, especially topics on Syria and campaign against terrorism, with the Russian guest.

He also referred to the importance Iran attaches to strategic ties with Russia.

‘Consolidated and strategic relations between Iran and Russia in establishing peace and stability in the region and settlement of issues are of high importance. As the time passes, the importance of such a relation is more revealed in the region and internationally.’

He also referred to Syrian issues and the importance of cooperation and coordination between Iran and Russia in that respect.

‘Iran and Russia are main allies of Syrian government and people and such cooperation could play an important role in regional developments and recent victories of Syrian people and government.’

Also referred to certain movements in the region recently, Velayati said certain reactionary states of the region and supporters of the terrorist groups, the extremists and Takfiris seek a way for saving of the defeated and fugitive groups and to make up their repeated failures. ‘We believe any diplomatic dialogue in connection with Syrian fate should be in consultation and consent of the government and nation of t he country.’
