Anticipated meeting between Presidents al-Sharaa and Trump in Saudi Arabia next month

An informed Syrian source told the Saudi newspaper “Al-Modon” that there is a Saudi attempt to bring together Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa and the US President Donald Trump, on the sidelines of the latter’s visit to Saudi Arabia next May.

According to the source, it is not sure that the Saudi attempt will succeed, and therefore the meeting may be held or it may not.

The source pointed out that by bringing the two presidents together, Saudi Arabia aims at obtaining the American legitimacy for the new Syrian government, and to persuade the American president to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria.

Media outlets had quoted a Syrian source that the upcoming meeting is being arranged and mediated personally by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Last Tuesday, President Trump announced his intention to pay an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in mid May, as his first foreign station in his second term.

Trump added that his tour will also include Qatar and the UAE, and that his visit to Riyadh will open the door for broader regional understandings.
