Announcing Preparatory Committee For Syrian National Conference Today

The Syrian presidency has completed the formation of the preparatory committee for the national conference, which will include five men and two women, whose identities will be officially revealed today, Wednesday, February 12, 2025.

This comes after President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s meeting yesterday with a delegation from the “Syrian Negotiatio Commission” and the “Syrian National Coalition” at the People’s Palace in Damascus, to hand over the files related to the work of the two institutions in preparation for announcing their dissolution.

President Al-Sharaa had previously announced that a preparatory committee would be formed, which would hold extensive consultations with various Syrian factions before the conference that would be held.

He stated that this conference “will issue a final statement that paves the way for a constitutional declaration that determines the future of the country,” adding that “the formulation of the constitutional declaration will not be an individual decision, but rather the result of broad consultations that reflect the will of the people.”

He noted the importance of holding consultations before the constitutional declaration because this “determines the shape and fate of the country, and includes very important topics, such as the shape of the Syrian identity.”

Al-Sharaa stressed that “these issues should not be handled by one person alone”, and he believes that it is better to have multiple consultations through which people’s opinions can be expressed and these consultations are considered recommendations given to the preparatory committee.
