MOSCOW, (ST)- Leila Darwish, a young Syrian gymnast, presents a bright example of ambitious Syrian women by her insistence to develop her talent and achieve her hope to be a champion in her sport.
As a gymnast, Laila achieved advanced positions in international sport competitions, the latest of which was getting the third place in the International Gymnastics Championship 2016 in Kazakstan .
Talking about her career to SANA, Laila said she started at the age of six to practice ballet dancing in Damascus and excelled in her performances. Later at the age of ten, she learned rhythmic gymnastics and continued until today, hoping every moment to raise the Syrian flag high in international competitions.
The young talented girl took part in several gymnastics championships in different countries including in Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Russia, and Kazakhstan where she won silver and bronze medals and was able to raise her country’s flag.
Now, Laila is studying medical sport and psychological treatment in one of Moscow’s universities. She is looking forward to returning home after graduation to practice her specialization by providing treatment to sportsmen in Syria and help them continue their successes, especially that Syria has talented youths who are full of energy.
Leila Darwish was born in 1995 in Al-Tal town in Damascus countryside. She traveled to Russia in 2012 for medical treatment of pains in the back and the joints, and with the purpose of completing her study of gymnastics which is a flourishing sport in Russia.
