During a Security Council session yesterday on the political and humanitarian issue in Syria, Sabbagh indicated that Syria has excreted great efforts in terms of consolidating national reconciliation. “It has provided decent living conditions for its citizens, rehabilitated infrastructure and basic services for them and it has rebuilt what was destroyed by terrorism”, he said.
Sabbagh added that Syria also has provided conditions for the voluntary return of the displaced Syrians to their country.
Sabbagh pointed out that Syria and its partners from the United Nations organizations and humanitarian agencies are still facing great challenges and difficulties to improve the humanitarian and living situation of the Syrian people due to the continued politicization of humanitarian and development work by Western countries and their clear violation of the principles governing it. “In addition, some countries deny their pledges to support humanitarian work and their commitments to provide the necessary funding for it, including the implementation of early recovery projects stipulated in Security Council Resolution 2642, as the proportion of funding for the Syria Response Plan to date is only a small part of the required funding” he said.
Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations pointed out that the United States and its Western allies continue to impose and expand illegal coercive economic measures that cause the Syrian people to suffer as a result of the acute shortage of in the basic needs that have very hard affecting on various aspects of Syrian citizen.
Sabbagh also said that the amount of Syrian oil looted is about 66,000 barrels per day, and during the past few days, more than 500 tanks filled with stolen Syrian oil went to the American bases in Iraq.
Sabbagh indicated that Syria is keen that h umanitarian aid reaches its needy in all parts of the country without discrimination.
Sabbagh pointed out that mines and explosive devices left by terrorist organizations still pose a major threat to the lives of Syrians, especially children, as the lack of progress in the process of removing these mines and explosive ordnance prevents Syrians from returning to their homes, agricultural lands, jobs and schools.
Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations called for respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity through the end of the illegitimate foreign presence on the Syrian territories. He also called for stopping the repeated Israeli attacks, and an immediate and unconditional end to the policies of economic terrorism and collective punishment imposed by the United States and European Union.
