Ambassador Sabbagh: The silence of the international community about the attacks of the Israeli occupation encourages it to continue these aggressive practices
New York, (ST) – Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, stressed yesterday during a Security Council session on the situation in the Middle East that, the continuous Israeli attacks on Syrian lands represent a serious threat to the security and stability of Syria and the region. He called for immediate condemnation and urgent intervention by the General Secretariat and the Security Council in order to protect the (Disengagement of Forces agreement of 1974).Sabbagh pointed out that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Faisal Miqdad, sent a letter a few days ago to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, in which he described a series of repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian lands. He warned of its danger to the security and stability of Syria and the region.
Miqdad said that, Syria reserves the right to respond by appropriate means established by international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
Sabbagh also pointed out that, the silence of the international community regarding the Israeli occupation entity’s repeated attacks on Syrian lands and practices in the occupied Syrian Golan and in the occupied Palestinian territories encourages it to continue its violations of the Charter of the United Nations. “This silence encourages the occupation to escalate its attacks, which exposes security and peace in the region to real dangers”, he added.
Sabbagh renewed Syria’s call on the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and the United Nations envoy to the Middle East to carry out their tasks towards the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan and its illegal aggressions and practices.
Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations explained that the Israeli occupation authorities continue their aggressive and provocative practices in the occupied Syrian Golan in flagrant violation of international legitimacy resolutions, especially resolutions 242, 338 and 497.
Sabbagh added that the Israeli occupation authorities have ignored the rules of international law and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949. He pointed out this is represented by the continuation of Israeli measures aimed at changing the legal and demographic nature of the Golan, seizing lands and properties, stealing natural resources and wealth, and implementing settlement plans in an attempt to prolong the occupation and obliterate the Syrian Arab identity of the Golan, in blatant defiance of all relevant United Nations resolutions.
Sabbagh stressed Syria’s firm adherence to its right to restore the entire occupied Syrian Golan up to the June 4, 1967 line, by all available means guaranteed by international law.
Sabbagh also said that Syria stressed that, the measures taken by Israel, the occupying Power, to change the natural and demographic features of the Golan or to impose its laws and authority on it are null and void and have no legal effect under international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, especially Security Council Resolution No. 497 of 1981
Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations indicated that, Syria is following with deep concern the extremely dangerous events and developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, especially the city of Al-Quds (Jerusalem). It condemns in the strongest terms the crimes and barbaric attacks committed by the Israeli occupation forces and settlers against worshipers and defenders of the Temple Mount in the courtyards of Al-AqsaMosque. He pointed out that the practices of the Israeli occupation authorities and settler gangs reflect the true image of the usurping Israeli entity and pose a serious threat to the rights of the Palestinian people and the historical and legal status of Al-AqsaMosque.
Sabbagh said that the international community’s unjustified silence and inaction in stopping these attacks, along with the unlimited US support for the practices of occupation, aggression, settlement, Judaization, killing, destruction and the seizure of Palestinian land will not change the clear and firm facts of history and will not make the Palestinian people give up their rights.
“Syria once again affirmed that the Palestinian cause will remain its main cause and its firm commitment to support the inalienable rights of the brotherly Palestinian people and to stand by its side in its legitimate struggle to defend its land and its holy sites and to restore its occupied lands and all its legitimate rights, especially its right to establish its independent state on its land with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital and the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, foremost of which is Resolution No. 194 of 1948 and granting Palestine full membership in the United Nations”, Sabbagh concluded.
